There are several companies offering fully managed server. Yet its hard to find what the defenition is and what is offerd within fully managed.
What is your defenition and what should be offerd? We define fully managed as everything apart from the content. The content is the only thing left to you. This is the *only* definition you can have, everything else is semi-managed at best.So from a fully managed serverhost, I can expect that they install every software I want?Yes thats what you *should* expect.Obviously any licencing has to be paid for and you may see some hosts define how many hours your allowed in a given monthfor management. Go over this and expect to pay extra. So from a fully managed serverhost, I can expect that they install every software I want?By no stretch of the imagination. You have to be very careful as to what is being managed in its entirety.Typically it should be the hardware, the connectivity and the operating system. From my experience in hosting very often you get clients who expect phpFoo and myBar which require a million and one dependencies that often conflict and open your server to a thousand vulnerabilities to be installed and configured etc etc etc. Also a client's code may be badly coded and running the machine into the ground. In either case that would be unfair to say that the provider has violated some sla. My take is that if the hardware breaks, it should be fixed, if the OS breaks it should be fixed.....if the OS breaks because the user code is dodgy, then you can expect to have a fresh re-install and maybe a restore of files from backup to some directory.N/A.Yes thats what you *should* expect.Obviously any licencing has to be paid for and you may see some hosts define how many hours your allowed in a given monthfor management. Go over this and expect to pay extra. No you *shouldn't* expect them to install ever thing under sun. To think that is just asinine and will do nothing but leave you unhappy and lead you on an endless search for something you probly wont ever find. Call the company and ask them exactly what manage means. One company might tell you one thing and another might tell you something else. If a company says they will install what ever on a server for you at your command I'd be kinda leary.I would think that any company with a fully managed product line would make their defition of fully-managed available. I would scour the site of whomever you are hosted with to find their definition, as I am sure it varies from host to host.Fully managed means different things to different companies. Check with each company you consider and ask what THEIR definition is.
--TinaThere is no one definition of fully managed, and there shouldn't be one definition of fully managed. Each company has their own definition of a managed server, and most have multiple tiers of management, which works out better for us consumers.

I agree. Its defination varies company by company. For me managed is everything except php programming and content update
My host phatservers.net is performing every single task i need like createing FTP accounts, setting up redirects, optimizing apache, fixing errors, installing scripts on request, thats the managed service i get
There are a number of companies which understand the managed as applying patches to OS/CP only, that is cant be called managed
I know that some top hosts like ISPrime.com or Natnet or Jupiterhosting interpret managed as i have described above and perform any task on request and average response time there is 5-10 minutes, thats why they are called top managed hostsFully managed is different to every host. Your hosting provider should clearly define what your and their responsibilities are. Most hosting provides will not support a client application but will support the OP system and health of the server. The more you are willing to pay the more responsibility the host company will take. Be worried of bids under $500 dollars. Their definition of fully managed is probably patch management and daily backup.Be worried of bids under $500 dollars. Their definition of fully managed is probably patch management and daily backup. ...and you base this on what?
That's an unfair statement. There are many companies providing that service, and very nicely, for under $500. A well managed machine, if you have a very competent administrator, is not a difficult thing to accomplish.
--TinaThat would depend on your definition of "fully managed"Looking after a server is not fully-managed, looking after the customer AND his/her server is fully managed - and that comes at a price. Not true, all top hosts are offering full management for under $500
