Is anyone interested in things like this to do with css?
It floored me and got me into designing gradients with css and primitive shapes but I just wonder if anyone is trying "out-there" ideas like this?I think what's been done there is quite amazing, but it also seems to be an insane waste of time - why not just use an image?!?Geek appeal
Sort of a chess-playing dog. It's cool he can do it but you don't expect him to win very often.qzn,

There's a ton of stuff like your pencil picture.
Plus things like interactive map games...
all with css only.Maybe I'm not enough of a geek. What is Css Pencils about? Are the "Channels" and "Fiilters" links supposed to do something? Because with my browser (Firefox 1.0.4) that is a completely dead site. Clicking any of the links, clicking the "reset image" link, or refreshing all has about the same effect as shouting swear words at my monitor.What is Css Pencils about?
Look at the html and css. The pencils look like an image, but they are over a 1000 carefully placed pixels defined by CSS. It's a very clever (yet time-consuming and page-filling (I mean there's a looooot of code) technique).
As I said before - a pointless waste of time when you could easily use an image.Presumably so that you can implement some filters and channels that will alter the "image" in some fashion, but that only work in some browsers. Not including Firefox, which probably comes closer to being an accurate renderer than most of the others.
And to think, here I am wasting my time creating boxes that people type data into -- data that other people then utilize. Nope, I'm just not enough of a geek.
I do sometimes use a <div> with border and background color to create "on the fly" something that looks and acts like a button but isn't an image. That's maybe a tiny bit geeky. And I used some purple on a web page last week...
But there's limits on how geeky a 62 year-old guy with Parkinson's and a cardiac arrythmia can bring himself to become.And I used some purple on a web page last week...By golly, Jayhawk, you're walkin' on the wild side now!
