CSS Drop Shadows Question

howdy. i've been trying to get this css drop shadow technique to work.. i've been working with the one on 'A List Apart' found at <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.alistapart.com/articles/cssdropshadows/">http://www.alistapart.com/articles/cssdropshadows/</a><!-- m --> .

i thought i had it working on a site where i was using it as the background image for the entire page, not just a paragraph or an image. i was initially under the impression that this shadow would stretch to fit whatever content was inside. but the more i think about it (and the longer i go without making it work right) the more i think that this cannot work. since when do background images "stretch" vertically with content? on my site, the background drop shadow is present but its attached to the top of its container and, although its containing div continues to the bottom of the page, the shadow itself does not.. please help.. i do NOT want to launch this site without the shadow if at all possible.
thanks,
johnnyIt's a (very) large background image that is placed on the bottom left of the background.
Any part of the image that 'sticks out' of it's container is naturally not shown.
