In light of the news from ICANN about the new expensive domains you could get, there might actually be a huge problem on the SEO/webmaster side. This is a interesting article with some good points mentioned.
Quote: ICANN, the governing body for all Internet addresses, has announced new changes on how domains will be named in the future, which could definitely spell trouble for not only Google but all the other search engines as well. But they won’t be the only ones. Small webmasters and online marketers should be more concerned and troubled by the introduction of these new “generic” or “dot anything” domains.
Why?
Mainly because these new ICANN changes will transform and alter the web forever.
The impact and range of this transformation will largely depend upon two factors. First, how wide or liberal will ICANN be in their interpretation and implementation of these new domain naming changes? Second, how quickly Internet users adjust to these changes and for that matter, whether or not, they will even use these new generic domains.
However, if human nature stays true and previous Internet usage stays firm, web users will want the fastest and easiest way to find what they’re looking for on the web. This is where the new “generic” domains could change the whole playing field. It could even possibly..... I just hope all the major search engines are already working on changes for when these new domains can be purchased for internet use. What are your thoughts?
Try to backup your response and not just post a "Yes" or "no"...etc response. This is going to be the era for domain flippers out there.. Hmmm.. Wait, a host name on "dot anything"? I should secure com.yahoo, com.bing and com.google and sell it to them should they wish for it. And I could be a millionaire. LOL.
Seriously, either dot anything or not, I don't see any reason why Search Engines will have a problem nor webmasters with that, for as long as they (SEs) stay away at giving importance to keyword domains and give more focus on positive signals such as diversified and editorial links to organize SERPs. I mean Search Engineers could set conditions once again like it did when the Internet becomes a hit, thus update algorithms (as it always happens), to give these new domains (of generic extensions) a great welcome while not totally shaking what's already a standard in place. Big guys can invest on it, can't they? NO...............
Sites are SEO'd with content and keyword.....
The only problem I see is with the public trying to remember site names....
But...that is the same today.....
)))) The problem like mentioned in the blog post is the keyword domains some rich company could get.
I would just continue to focus on long tail keywords and hope the rich companies who buy these domains don't out rank us all. lol Remember....
No one can get ALL of the business......a small percentage of that big pie can be a big number....
