Hiya guys; I just got a new website, SuperPower2.com
I'm wondering a few things b4 I commit myself to one
single layout/design, etc.
1) Does using a CMS like PHPNuke, Mambo, PostNuke, etc.
effect (better/worse) your search engine rating?
2) Which is better? Nuke or Mambo? I've tried to do
'Nuke via one-click install on cPanel but I never
figured out exactly how to add/remove stuff, etc.
On my personal comp I've gotten the hang of Mambo...
3) Which is more easier/able to customize to your look?
As well as insert google AdSense coding into them to display
my advertisments from Google? etc.
Thnkx 4 any/all replies in advance Well, I can't speak on Mambo, but I have a ton of experience using PostNuke and I would recommend it if you aren't afraid to play with some of the code to make it do exactly what you want.
1) The sites I run do not suffer from search engine shyness. Each of them appear at the top of Google listings when the appropriate terms are searched for. Part of this is because I've named my sites in a manner that best describes them.
2)I've tried the CPanel install of Postnuke, and I wouldn't recommend it. First, in my experience, the version has been out of date and certain security vulnerabilities have been discovered in older versions. Also, the script tends to screw up the database prefixes in the times I've tested it. I recommend going with the normal installation methods. It isn't very complex, particularly if you are familiar with databases. Make sure you know your server's database specifics before you start though (host, password, DBName etc...).
3)As long as you know a bit of PHP and understand how MySQL works, you can customize anything about Postnuke you need to. You mentioned AdSense, so have a look at one of my sites at <!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.ottawafootball.com">www.ottawafootball.com</a><!-- w --> and see how I've inserted Adsense into my page. You can see a blank area in the upper right hand corner where I used to have the ads, but I've moved them further down the screen in the centre just recently. Not hard at all.
For help with Postnuke, I use the Postnuke.com forums quite a bit. A few of the developers apparently spend their whole day there and must answer dozens of questions every day. Plus, I believe Postnuke has the largest community of open source module developers so there is likely already something created for whatever needs you might have.You actually may already know of something I'm looking for;
Something for a PC Strategic video game;
search for Super Power and Super Power2 for more info...
And I want to *easily* insert new articles, etc. about
various things; i.e., a beginners guide
to economics in the game, etc.
As well a built-in forums system (perferbly IPB),
members only Download area, etc. postnuke's whole purpose has been to create an easy system that allows the admin (and permitted users) to add articles. There are a ton of different aspects to it, but basically it comes down to you, the admin, creating multiple "topics" and assigning each of your articles to a particular topic. Look at my website, and you'll see the articles are each catagorized under "Renegades News", "OVFL News", "NCAFA News" etc...
Postnuke's default installation comes with a Download module where users can Download files you've added, but it does not come with a forum as it's default installation. There are number of good ones out there though that have integrated themselves with Postnuke (utilizing the same theme, user information, etc...), with the most popular (and most integrated) being "pnphpBB2".
Feel free to ask any other questions you might have.
