character spacing problems?

I tried installing vbadvanced links directory 2.0.2 the other day on my vb 3.7.1 forum configuration. When I went to do the install, I got a message that it was incompatible with my current version 3.6.8 vbulletin installation? No big deal, it didn't work. However, I have this weird problem now. Whenever anybody posts, or responds to a post, some characters in their text get spaces like my example below:

See how example has a space and topic has a space? What the h3ll happened?
 
Can anybody help me with this? It's driving me crazy. I just upgraded to 3.7.2 PL1 and it didn't change anything. I figured the reverted templates would have straightened out the problem, but it didn't. It's still happening. Words are randomly getting empty character spaces added and screwing up replies and new posts.
