Hi
I'm wanting to change the name of a URL but want to know if it may have a negative effect
I know improving the name would help with SEO but would any good ranking the page already has be lost? Quote: Originally Posted by cevans Hi

I don't see any need; most want to change names so the keyword is in the domain, but you can easily put this in the sub-domain if you have to. The name, as long as it is not super long, will have not relative bearing on the search engine results, unless you have the keyword you are wanting to rank for in the domain. As mentioned above, if you change the URL, you're starting over on a new domain name. There's really no reason to do that, unless the current URL you're using is really not related to your keywords. Changing a website's address is a very complex thing as all your visitors will now be going to the website with new URL. My suggestion will be to put 301 redirects step by step, not in one go. This will also transfer the page rank and link juice of previous URL as well. 301 redirection is the best solution for that, so your site traffic and backlinks can still flow on the new URL.. If the URLs you are talking about relate to your internal web pages, and the contents have not been online for a long time, to be given some ranks and perhaps winning some links, editing their structures will not probably have big impacts on your ranks, especially if the number of pages to get edited is small. In such cases, trying to create some keyword-rich structures would be nice, such as the solutions used by admins of blogs when they install some plug-ins on their sites which create SE friendly web structures.
The real problem will arise when an older content page of a website, which already has decent ranks online and lots of one-way links point at it suddenly undergoes some big changes, without using proper redirects. In such cases loss of rank would more than probably happen because stable status online can be the key element when it comes to fixing positions of websites or pages. If you are thinking of creating some new content pages, try using SE friendly styles, adding keywords to your HTML names. hi.
better to use 301 redirect because by using this traffic and backlink will flow on new URL also.
