Can't get DBM Files to retrieve properly

I have spent the day trying to get DBM files set up.

Running with PWS 4.0 on Win98, installed PHP4.04.

I can write to DBM ok. And i can read. However, for some reason when i read the data is offsetting wrongly, so i get things like

5Coupe or ouper6 when what i actually want is Couper

Anyone come across this before???

To get dbm working at all i had to use the php_db.dll extension.
