When you are linking to another site in the same niche, you are telling google two things.
1) My site is similar to the one that is linked.
2) You are suggesting that there is more info over on that site.

How it helps you?(In terms of SEO)
I believe just relevancy, which can also be done by on-page Seo. However, if you want to help your visitors then doing this will help them for sure.

How it can be harmful?
Directly linking to a competitor can help him easily outrank you and always have an edge over you as long as you are linking to him.
You are passing on your linkjuice to someone in your niche.

How to avoid it?
The Nofollow Tag. Quote: Originally Posted by paneli Would it be benefical for my own site to add outgoing links pointing high quality sites? Yes, if they are related to the topic and beneficial to your readers. Builds you as the "Go To" resource over time because you provide quality information.

Helped to build my PR and incoming links initially doing this. i.e. I don't link swap, buy or sell links and started it before there was such a thing as the nofollow attribute. Well as far as I know, outgoing links only helps your reader if you are pointing to a good article and from SEO perspective, it don't help your site. The web sites to which you link help your site visitors to put your site into a larger context. If you link to spammed web sites then search engines might think that your web site is also spam. Only when the links chosen carefully to outside resources can improve the visitors to your site... Outgoing links can be as helpful as incoming links. They can help you rank as well. Search engines knows what your site is being linked and what your site is all about through outgoing links. Relevant linking to what type of website you have. If you link to trusted sources, then search engines will believe that your site is relevant to the topic. Outbound links can make your online business seem more real and trustworthy to your customers. it is really controversial question. wiki have such logic - related links after topics. it may mean that your site considering query more. otherwise there is a link farms, directories or smtg. and that obviously harms your site Its useful but you should note to not link to your competitors . For example you can link to wikipedia or like this sources which are well known and are not your competitors. IMO pointing to related links tells search engines and visitors that the current page is valuable and we can trust the content of it. Outgoing links are good for you but not useful for your website, Google don't like it. Quote: Originally Posted by HTMLBasicTutor

What i am however not sure of is whether linking to authority sites actually enhances PR. Quote: Originally Posted by 1985davidwhite Outgoing links are good for you but not useful for your website, Google don't like it. Really? Then why did the Official Google Webmasters Blog say this:
Quote: Thoughtful outbound links can help your credibility. Linking out: Often it's just applying common sense
