Thanks in advance.If the images were for decorative purposes only, then I should imagine it is for that reason. No point making someone Download an image if it is not applicable to them.
Although there is a negative side to this. People that the images are applicable to but just happen to have an older browser won't see them. They still aren't content though, so it doesn't matter too much.
Here's a simple rule I go by: If it ain't content, it ain't going in the document.
The only things that should be in your document are content parts that deliver information to or recieve information from the user. Such as Paragraphs of text, images of something like a map (because it has an actual purpose and delivers information in a visual format, rather than being mere decoration.), forms and so on.
Users visiting from mobile telephones will be one of the greatest benefactors of such a practice.
