Backlinks hunting - is it natural?

Most of the SEO topics concern the methods of building backlinks for a Web site. This has become the main goal of all webmasters long time ago and now nobody looks for other methods to promote a Web site. All "other methods" have the same ultimate goal - to get new backlinks. I was thinking about this habit recently and found it to be really odd. Why all of us are talking about backlinks while in fact we need more traffic? We are forced to build backlinks just because search engines heavily use them to estimate the quality of our Web sites but this is not natural. Plenty of backlinks that only appear due to our own efforts don't improve our Web sites in fact. So it is just the search engines' trend that drives us to a false goal. And the longer we follow it the more we become dependent on the major search engines. What do you think about it? Do all of you are hunting for backlinks only? Do you think that there are no other ways of getting more traffic? I don't feel there is other source other than major back links even if we come across anything new it will not be as good as back links coz a link back from any site will help you get traffic if it is related to our content. Well I guess it's normal for someone who wants to be ahead on track to look for new and better resources/links that he thinks would help a site to go further. It's not really bad to seek other possible ways to get new links. But too much of something isn't good either.. Content and Backlinks seem to be the bread and butter of getting traffic. Now with google's move to factor out link farms will probably put more emphasis on quality links, but backlinks are an important factor for determining SERPs, and it will probably stay that way until something dramatic happens. I think it's first of all having a great site that you think is worth promoting.
Unfortunately, no matter how great your site is, if nobody is finding it, it is likely not making you very much money (and most of us here definitely want to earn more money).

So if you are looking for more visitors, you really only have a few options. If you are a local business, then you may want to pay for local advertising. If you are more national or global, you may want to pay for internet advertising. However, I speak from experience when I say that paying for advertising can get real expensive real fast.

That's why most of us are focusing on SEO and link building. It generates
