Backing up of database

hello all

could some one please tell me that :

1) is it absolutely necessary to be backing the database up for every mod hack or style or upgrading?

2) should the data base be backed up via phpadmin that the web hosting provides?

3) Should the database be backed up in SQL file?

4) i tried backing up my data, i backed up in word format and sql format. word format was 14 mb and sql formate was not even a single MB. I got worried that my data may not have been copied properly. I could not open the file and could not read it.

5) so can someone tell me that how does the file look like after successful back up and that what is the ratio of the size of the file compared to the original database running on forum. And that if I copy it, would it be easy to restore it?

6) Also, I would like to find out how can i make a test forum where i can do all the experiments. if someone could be generous to outline the procedure i would really be grateful.

thanks in abundance in advance

1) is not that necessary but it will save you some headeaches when a mod don't work

2) personally I use mysqldumper for the backups is easy to backup and restore

3) I back the database up with a tar.gz file that is interpreted by the mysqldumper

4) huh? that is not even a question

6) download xampp install it in your pc, then you will have a test server to test things out, install vb, scripts or whatever you want, procedure well just install it just as another program and then go to c:/xampp/htdocs. that's where you can upload your vb, if you want to manage the databases jst go to We'll Have More Soon

thanks itsuki. yeah number 4 was not a question, more like an explanation.

two things please:

1) where can i get this, "mysqldumper for the backups" from?
2) would this TEST thingy you provided, be online? i mean on the internet or just local on my computer?

thanx a bunch
