auto save a file...

i dont think this can be completed without a users clicking of a button, but i'm wanting to store permantatly on a viewers system the fav.ico file. i know this file can is cashed when the site is visited, but if the history is cleared, so is the .ico file for the site!

NOTE: the fav.ico file is an icon used when viewing and saving a site to your favorites.
view <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.favicon.com">http://www.favicon.com</a><!-- m --> for more info.

maybe? I have visited sites that do this. I just visit, and when I leave they have magically appeared in my favorites folder.Won't internet Explorer prompt you before adding a site to your favorites? or does that depend on the security setting of the user's browser?No offence, but personally there is nothing I find more annoying (except maybe pop-up boxes) than a site which seamlessly adds to my favourites list. I delete them straight away and vow never to return!!There are sites who use this unscrupulous technique to automatically forces users to bookmark.getting back on track....

i dont want to automatically bookmark the site to a persons favorites (we discussed that in an earlier thread and discovered that it could only be accomplished with a users ok, like an onclick statement)

to refrain, when you first do an install of IE5.5 a large selection of bookmarks are added with unique icons. i want the *.ico file to save to the persons system (not just in the cache) so the next time they view their favorites they will be able to access my site faster when they see the bookmark!

still open for suggestions
chris<pixelmonkey>:monkey:once a site auto. added themselves to my bookmarks..another site auto. changed my homepage...I will never go to that sites again. (thats if I remember it :))

:monkey: I don't think that the icon will be saved auto. to the users system, and I think saving to the cache is the only way.I don't believe you can make it permanent. You're just gonna have to live with it, its designed to work that way, puts control in the hands of the client where the control belongs, not the remote server.

I know I would not want stuff being permanently stored on my computer from the internet unless I designate that it should be, like a file Download .

Regards,
Kevin
