Aural style sheets: speak?

Been playing around a bit with this but with no luck. Read about it somewhere and found it interesting. Is there currently a way to have the computer 'speak' the words on a page without having some alternate program to do so?Originally posted by aderouin
No.Does any one know of a browser that can actually take advantage of aural style-sheets? It seems like such a wasted technology at the moment. :(No, I still do not... The situation is a disgrace; how is the penniless XHTML Coder supposed to probably implement Aural Cascading Style Sheets (ACSS) if he doesn't have the user-agent to actually hear the content as defined via ACSS?

Let alone one that costs: http://www.speakthis.com/

Surely developing an open source user-agent, or plugin that can handle ACSS isn't a pipedream, I suppose you'll have to start a petition Rick.

I may have to ask Ian Lloyd about this topic and see if I can get him to publish it on his site. There's a list of 35 non-visual browsers at http://www.w3.org/WAI/References/Browsing. You'll have to do the work of finding out which ones support aural style sheets.

However, open source plugins rock.Precisely Charles it's finding one that handless ACSS, well I'll put this lazy T-1 to use and get rummaging.

I went to each link listed and couldn't find anything about ACSS on those linked site homepages, the only other option would be to Download the free versions.Rumour has it that many of the leading Aural browsers are available for preview testing with eg "allow unregister version of browser to work 15 minutes first time after OS reboot".

I havn't verified this myself, but 15 minutes would probably be enough to test out how your page works (or not, as the case might be :D).I think it's a shame that Opera hasn't done more in this area, as it is very good with accessibilities. I suppose maybe they don't want to make the size of it too big, as it's one of the things they like to boast about :D Would be good if they make a plug-in themselves that you could optionally Download . Maybe I'll ask on their forum.
