arrange colors horizontally

i have seen this before on here some1 posted a thread "how to do this" or something but i cant find it

the colors of the forums (1st and 2nd alternating colors) are arranged vertically next to each other by default

how do i make them horizontally arranged with the 1st alt color in the whole row and the next row is colored with the 2nd alt color

i dont know if i am clear with my question but i cant phrase this any better atm
