Are Title Tags no longer important?

Okay, so one of my sites was ranked #3 for a very good keyword. This keyword was not even in my title tags (although I did use this keyword for some of the links I have acquired).

I was stuck at #3 for a long time, so I finally decided to add this keyword to my title tags in the hope it might boost me to #1. Instead, three days later, I dropped to #33. Since then I have slowly rose to #20.

Strangely enough, however, I now notice that I am ranked #3 for a different but also very good keyword. This is a keyword that is not in my title tags, and now I don't dare to add.

So it seems that my site ranks high for keywords that are not in my title tags, but when I add them to my title tags my position for this keyword goes down. Crazy!

Now I know you're probably just saying that it is all about the anchor text of my links and not about the onsite optimization. But then my question would be...Does it even matter anymore if we use our keywords in our title tags? Is onsite optimization totally obsolete? Onsite SEO doesn't matter as much as a few years ago but it's still important. I think what you are describing is not a rule, this might have to do with the keyword density, etc. Take a look at other sites, and many have their keywords in the title. But remember......Google uses a couple of hundred factors to determine rank....

You can be really strong in one area and a little weak in another and still do very well.... I've been doing a lot of reading lately on SEO from every "good" source I can find and they all seem to agree that on-site SEO such as the title tag account for about 20-30% and off-site (links, etc.) are the other 70-80%. I noticed a good jump when I added a couple of keywords in my title within a week. Much more than I was gaining from mere link building alone.

Now I'm not saying that the title is more important, just that it can only give you a one time boost per se, unless you change your keyword density possibly. I wouldn't be afraid to add it in if it matches the words you have on your site, but if you really feel comfortable leaving it off and you're top 5 already anyway, then maybe you shouldn't. Just know that it does matter some, just not one of the main things. Google has many database to crawl the website. May be you have done the good on-page for website or your domain name is much similar to your ranked keyword or your domain age old. I am also scratching my head how come it's possible if you add the keyword in title tag then you r ranking is going down. it's good if you collect the baclink for your ranked keywords then you will be #1 on google it all game of backlink and try to analyze your competitors what they are doing for their website. Title tag is nor more then the 70 character after this 60 character Google not crawl your title of your website.... your title tag must be 65-70 character not more then that...and must be unique title.. Title tag is being always a necessary signal for SERP ranking. Major search engines like Google give a lot of weight to fully optimized titles for pages. But now a days Gogole also updated its algorithms for spam prevention. You need to write relevant titles for pages. Don't stuffed title with keywords, write genuine title keeping in mind the real visitors. my opinion keep your title only 1 word maximum 2 words , this way you give value to this word, and easily reach the density needed for the specific keyword that you are trying to promote Interesting observation. I think on page seo is important but it has been devalued over the years. I have not had the same experience as you using H1 tags.....it seemed to help a lot. Title tags are important. Which are not important are keyword tags. The title tag is still important.

For example ,if your content is semi-original,you may do a trick on title tag what would help for ranking Quote: Originally Posted by jasonvan Does it even matter anymore if we use our keywords in our title tags? Is onsite optimization totally obsolete? I believe it is very important.

Take note that changing or optimizing your title tags won't hurt you. So why not just do it then. It is still one of the 'basics' of optimizing a webpage.

Just my It's important because that's the first thing search engines see whenever they crawled your site. Though title tag is not the only factor for onsite optimization, keyword distribution and density are part of it. I think your site dropped to lower position because you suddenly change your title.

as far as i know, when search engine crawled your site, it will save those data. BUT, when you change your title, that time, search engine will re-crawl again your site. So, they will give the point from beginning again, that's why from #33, your site slowly raise to #20.

So, when you "suddenly" change your title, it will affect SEO.This is what i know..... My opinion on this matter is that its not "the most" important (the title tags) rather its one of the important factors for a successful seo campaign because there are lots of factors to consider besides title tags only. For me, Title of the page is still the most of the important things required to get ranked your website on top SERPs. I do believe that incorporating meta tags in your website is worthwhile because these meta tags are the ones that tell the search engine what your page is all about. Without these meta tags, search engines will create their own description based on the first 100 characters of your page. Besides, not all search engines alter their algorithms in terms of recognizing meta tags. There are still some search engines like Google that make use of meta tags when it comes to indexing websites. I do agree with you, base on every time I search at google, the site with meta description will appear at description on google search result

But when I saw a site without description, the result on google will appear based on body of your page

and, because the body of your page isn't much as you target for the keywords, it won't optimize for SERP.

Bottom line is The biggest score at one page for SERP is the title (first) and description(second).

NB : base on my opinion. Very strange!! buddy, it maybe with your site but i always got good ranking with a specific keyword when i inserted in site title tags. In seo, still there are something which can't be described properly.
