Burnett hoping for July fireworks

By Joe Capozzi, Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

DENVER -- A year ago Thursday, Marlins pitcher A.J. Burnett underwent reconstructive elbow surgery. Now, he is hoping to rejoin the rotation by July 1.

"I can't believe it's been a year. It seems longer,'' he said.

That's because Burnett started the 2003 season as the staff ace, then watched as his teammates went on to win the World Series.

"It had to have been crushing for him. I don't think any of us truly understand what he felt,'' catcher Mike Redmond said. "But I don't think there was ever any doubt he would pitch again.''

The Marlins insist there is no timetable for Burnett's return, but he is on schedule to rejoin the rotation by July 1 if he has no further setbacks in his rehabilitation.

On Tuesday, he threw in the bullpen, snapping curveballs for the second time in four days. His next bullpen session is Saturday. If that goes well, he will throw live batting practice at Pro Player Stadium next Wednesday or Thursday.

Live batting practice is the step before throwing competitively, which Burnett would do for several starts in the minors.

The typical recovery time from Tommy John surgery is 12 to 18 months, which means that Burnett's consistent velocity probably wouldn't return until next season.

But the Marlins know anything is possible with Burnett.

"He's not a normal human being. He's A.J.,'' pitching coach Wayne Rosenthal said.

When he returns, manager Jack McKeon must decide which of his current starters will move to the bullpen. The odd man out could be left-hander Darren Oliver
You'll have to play with the percentages for the widths to how you want it.
