Alternate stylesheets; default's rules carrying over

I would like to know if the following is supposed to happen: When I switch to an alternate stylesheet in FireFox (using "alternate stylesheet"- i'm not going to worry about the JS switcher yet.), the rules that I didn't declare in the alternate stylesheet, but are present in the default, carry over. This, obviously, destroys the page's look, and I would very much prefer if it didn't happen.

Can anyone tell me why this is happening to me, or if there's a way to stop it?Read this article (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.alistapart.com/articles/alternate/">http://www.alistapart.com/articles/alternate/</a><!-- m -->), particularly the paragraph 'Persistent'.
