administring multiple MySQL servers

This may sound pretty stupid but I've heard of people talking about "administring multiple MySQL servers". What exactly does that mean...does that mean installing multiple copies of MySQL on the computer (server)? What is the point of administering multiple MySQL servers? I assume speed is one reason...is that right? What are the other reasons? How does one know which (copy of) MySQL server administers which database (and its tables)? Please....explanation in laymans terms only!! As always, a big THANK YOU in advance to everyone who puts up with my ignorance and replies!!

Allen.
