Before you post a comment, read the blog post first. This blog post is from the YOUmoz blog btw.
Quote: When you start out in link building, almost everyone recommends to check out your competitors. And I agree: it is very important to know who you're dealing with in the SERPs.
Many people additionally recommend to "get" all those links your competitors have built so far. However, this can be a potentially dangerous and rather inefficient approach to link building. Let me tell you why. Continued at: http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/5-reasons-...is-bad-for-you
Please share your opinions on the 5 reasons that Matthias has mentioned in this blog post. Backup your response with some resources if you have to.
Don't forget to read the blog comments. I agree mostly. I understand the reasons but don't agree you should pass an opportunity to get and use a useful link. For example You might find a niche directory you were unaware of.
The article doesn't seem to care about the fact one type of link can be more useful than another.
I don't like point 4, I mean if you think about it, the web itself could be seen as a link research tool. Huh? If authoritative niche sites are providing important back links then I am going to seek them out regardless of whether a competitor has already secured a link there. I am a brick and mortar business and I too am going to secure links in local directories which what I assume is every other competitor is doing.
If there are multiple competitors for links on a site, then let the one offering the superior content gain the most benefit from the link. That is the battlefield, not who gets there first. I like the approach of Garret French at http://ontolo.com/ , he decides which type of links he wants then finds sites that can provide those type of links. Sightless copying apparently has its boundaries and risks but research what our competitors are doing and most importantly considerate why it works(then make it work for us) is really useful. I have also observed that copying links are not too good. One should analyze links of competitors but nut just copy their link building. Analyzing is done to have better link building for our website and not for copying. I dont actually agree with that due to the below reason
1. Normally we are referring on at least top 10 competitor (it can up to 30), not only one competitor, so it will happen that "totally same backlink"
2. that's impossible to get the exactly backlink too due to many reason
3. We have also additional backlink other than only duplicate the backlink from the competitor.
At least 3 points appear on my mind within 3 minutes I copy all sorts of people, if the measuring metric is results based, never been a problem for me Quote: Originally Posted by businessservicesuk I copy all sorts of people, if the measuring metric is results based, never been a problem for me Do you at least give a linkback to the source or mention the website? This is an amazing piece of information. I have always followed the way of checking out competitors' links in Yahoo Site Explorer and then trying to have backlinks from same sources but after reading this, I have started thinking about the other options I have. I copy competitors links all the time, and will stay it.
I copy not only one website, but multiple website, and abandon some backlinks source which seams have so many Outbound Link,so my total backlinks never similar to my competitors. I think worryiing about what your competitor is doing is a small part of SEO. You need to get out there and build your own presence not just copy cat someone else. Dart has the right idea:

Which is more important to you and your client? Saving some time now or loosing your reputation because you have to rebuild your site's credibility after the search engines kick your butt for being lazy? Being lazy can help you till a certain limit but if you want to get market and SE trust than do it in yours own way not according to your opponents way. Thus you'll look genuine and more intelligent. The competitors links can give you some good ideas for your own link building strategy but never just do a direct copy. If you want to be the leader then lead the way Somebody (Snakeair?) has already posted this link a few weeks ago. I'll say now what I said then: Niche and local directory links are going to overlap between competitors. If one of my competitors finds such links first, I am not going to forego getting getting similar links. Quote: Originally Posted by empori_exchange Please read it and give your feed backs

5 Reasons Why Copying Links is Bad for You
so what's gonna happen after Yahoo site explorer is gone???? Merged your thread btw. Not sure I'm in 100% agreement with the author. Copying links will not keep you at the top, granted.. But seeing where they generate links can give you some ideas. I have also looked at the directories my competition list in and added mine to them as well. I feel this evens the playing field somewhat and allows me to explore other avenues as well. If backlink checking tools become a thing of the past, yes, most SEO's would be in deep trouble, because most would not know where to go to build without reference.
