1and1 domain registrations, huge price differences US compar

Last night I tried to register a name through 1and1.com - and wasn't allowed to do so, since I live in the UK.

So, I went then to 1and1.co.uk and discovered to my astonishment a huge hike in price, for registering a .com domain name.

Now, you and I know, there is not one iota of difference from which country a .com name is registered. One country over another does Not for any sound, reasonable reason, incur such a hefty penalty with any basis in reason, except to rip people off.

For example, if you go to 1and1.com you will find that a .com costs $6.99 to register a .com for one year.

If you go to 1and1.co.uk - suddenly the price has jumped up to an astonishing $18.00 for exactly the same, give or take a cent or two.

I wrote to their customer service department regarding this, asking for an explanation, a justification on why UK customers were being told to pay so much more for exactly the same product.

They told me that it was not their department to deal with it, that I should write Billing Enquiries directly with my concern. Very short and sweet.

So, writing directly the Billing Department, I put the same question to them.

Answer. Because we have an office in the UK, UK customers can only purchase domains through the UK site.

Needless to say, I once again wrote them, demanding in no uncertain terms the justification for charging such an excessive amount to UK potential customers, upon which I am now waiting a response upon.

I will update this thread shortly.

Has anyone here got any good or bad experiences regarding this company?

The only reason I need an account with them, is to have transferred to a 1and1 account, 3 names I bought privately. Otherwise I most certainly would not be touching their company with a bargepole.

I also notice that for transfers between 1and1 accounts they charge an unusually high amount of money for this service also, when most other respectable registrars of course, provide this service completely free, without charge. (No free registration either).

What are your experiences of using 1and1.com and/or .co.uk?
